Marathi Diwali sequence — how the days fit together
Urban Maharashtra often compresses Diwali into one long weekend, but the traditional Marathi order helps you plan leave, sweets, and guest lists without burnout:
- Vasubaras / Dhanteras (preceding days): Many families buy metal utensils or symbolic “wealth” items before the main lamp night — check your local panchanga for exact tithi in late October/early November overlap.
- Naraka Chaturdashi — 8 November 2026: The “Diwali” holiday for most offices in Maharashtra. Early oil bath (abhyang snan), kandeel lighting, firecracker restrictions per municipal rules, and Laxmi puja after sunset. Finish shopping by 6 November — markets in Dadar, Laxmi Road (Pune), and Sitabuldi (Nagpur) choke with crowds.
- Kartik Amavasya — 9 November: The dark-moon night; some households hold extended pitru or ancestral lamp offerings. Not always a separate holiday but spiritually significant between Chaturdashi and Padwa.
- Balipadyami / Padwa — 10 November: Second public holiday for many. New Year greetings in Vikram Samvat traditions, gudi-like symbolism in some homes, and business owners opening fresh accounts (Sharad Purnima–to–Padwa commerce cycle).
- Bhau Beej — typically 11 November: Sisters perform aarti for brothers and share a meal — culturally paired with Padwa though exact tithi can shift by region. If you invite married sisters from out of town, book trains before Ganesh-season traffic memory fades — Diwali trains sell out equally fast.

Ekadashi rhythm in Kartik
Utpanna Ekadashi (6 Nov) opens the month’s fasting cycle — many Vaishnava families observe strict or partial fasts through Kartik. Mokshada Ekadashi (21 Nov) is considered especially meritorious; some temples in Pandharpur and ISKCON centres hold all-night kirtan. Kartika Purnima and Dev Diwali echoes
24 November 2026 is Kartik Purnima. In Maharashtra the day is quieter than Diwali but important for river ghats, kartik deepotsav in some temples, and boating festivals in Konkan tourist towns. If you planned a pilgrimage to Pandharpur or Shegaon, purnima weekends attract queues — arrive a day early.
