Marriage Muhurat Guide | विवाह मुहूर्त कसा निवडला जातो?

Educational guide to how Hindu wedding dates are shortlisted in Maharashtra — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, Venus rules, closed months — plus a practical checklist before you book the hall. Not personal astrological advice.

Disclaimer: This article explains general principles only. It does not replace a qualified jyotishi or family pandit who knows your kundali, gotra, and local sampradaya. For 2026 date lists see Marriage Muhurat 2026 — confirm every date before payment.

What is vivaha muhurat? (विवाह मुहूर्त)

In Marathi families, a wedding is not “any Saturday that the hall is free.” The vivaha muhurat (विवाह मुहूर्त) is the chosen day and clock time when saat phere, kanyadan, and related rituals begin under auspicious panchanga conditions. The word muhurat means a measured moment — often a window of minutes for lagna (लग्न — ascendant sign rising on the eastern horizon).

Two layers exist:

  1. General shubh dates — good for most couples in a month (what our Marriage Muhurat 2026 page lists).
  2. Personal muhurat — filtered by bride/groom janma kundali, mangal dosha, nadi, bhakut, and family deity traditions.

This guide teaches layer one so you understand why August might be empty and April busy — before you pay a hall deposit.

Key factors astrologers evaluate

Full muhurat work reads the five limbs of panchanga plus planetary positions. Household planning usually hears these terms:

Tithi (तिथी)

Lunar day quality. Many Maharashtra lists avoid Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th — Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya for weddings. Favoured tithis often include Dwitiya through Saptami in Shukla paksha, subject to month rules.

Vaar (वार — weekday)

Some communities prefer Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday; others avoid specific weekday–deity combinations. Vaar also determines Rahu Kaal for baraat departure planning.

Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)

Moon’s mansion at wedding time must harmonise with couple’s birth stars. Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati appear on many “good” lists — but personal chart can veto any generic list.

Yoga (योग)

Inauspicious yogas (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Vyaghata, etc.) reject a day even if tithi looks fine.

Karana (करण)

Vishti (Bhadra) karana is widely avoided for marriages.

Planetary states

Shukra (Venus) strong for marriage; combustion (Shukra Moodha) closes months. Guru (Jupiter) direct and well-placed supports muhurat. Mangal checked for dosha remedies.

Months with no (or few) marriage muhurat in 2026

Our 2026 list marks these as closed or empty for general shubh weddings:

January — Shukra Moodha (शुक्र मुढ / combustion)

When Venus is too close to the Sun, many traditions suspend weddings. January 2026 has no listed dates on our site.

August — Ashadha / Shravana season

Monsoon Ashadha (आषाढ) and early Shravana are considered unsuitable for new grihastha beginnings in numerous Maharashtra communities. Halls may be cheap — but pandits often decline to fix muhurat.

September — Pitru Paksha (पितृपक्ष)

The fortnight before Sharad Navaratri honours ancestors. Weddings and griha pravesh are traditionally paused.

October — Navaratri (नवरात्र)

Nine nights of Devi worship — ceremonies shift to puja, not vivaha. Our October 2026 list is empty for weddings.

Busy months instead

February, April, May, June, November, December show many dates — April around Akshaya Tritiya (20 April 2026) is especially sought. Book halls early.

July — before Ashadha cutoff

Limited dates early July; after Devshayani Ekadashi (25 June 2026 — see Ekadashi guide) Chaturmas influences strict families to pause large ceremonies until Devuthani Gyaras.

Tithi and nakshatra — how lists are built

Publishers like our site start from a master rule set (avoid Amavasya, Bhadra, eclipses, heavy inauspicious yogas) then mark remaining days as “indicative shubh.” Personal astrologers subtract days conflicting with your stars.

Example reasoning (simplified)

Suppose a Tuesday in May has Shukla Panchami, Rohini nakshatra, Preeti yoga, no Bhadra, Venus direct — it may appear on a public list. If the groom’s birth star is Bharani with a nadi clash, the pandit removes it despite the public list.

Ekadashi weddings

Some communities allow; many Brahmins avoid. Do not assume a listed date overrides your family rule.

Intercaste / civil marriage note

Court marriage dates ignore panchanga; Hindu ceremony dates may still be chosen separately for family function — two calendars coexist in modern Maharashtra.

Venus (Shukra) and marriage timing

Shukra governs marriage, arts, and harmony in jyotisha. Astrologers check:

  • Shukra Moodha — Venus combust near Sun → wedding moratorium (January 2026 on our site).
  • Shukra vakri — Venus retrograde: some avoid, others accept with remedies.
  • Shukra in favourable houses in muhurta chart for the chosen lagna.

This is why “hall available” ≠ “shubh for vivaha.”

Lagna and clock time — beyond the date

Final muhurat is a clock time when lagna rises auspiciously — often evening in Maharashtra weddings but morning in some Konkan rituals. Pandits calculate:

  • Muhurta lagna strength (7th house, Venus, Jupiter).
  • Avoidance of Rahu-Ketu axis on lagna lord.
  • Overlap with Abhijit or Shubh Choghadiya where possible.
  • Muhurat duration (often 30–120 minutes) for pheras start.

Website date lists rarely show lagna time — ask pandit before printing invitations.

Step-by-step process families follow

Typical Maharashtra vivaha planning timeline (simplified):

  1. Roka / sakarpuda — informal engagement; some check basic tithi, not full lagna.
  2. Horoscope exchange — kundali matching (nadi, bhakut, mangal); astrologer may reject match or suggest remedies.
  3. Month shortlist — compare site month grid with pandit’s “open months.”
  4. Hall booking hold — refundable deposit only after pandit approves at least two date options.
  5. Lagna patrika — printed invitation with exact muhurat time; distribution to relatives.
  6. Pre-wedding vrata — haldi, kelvan, devak — each may have sub-muhurats.

Skipping step 3 and booking a “cheap August hall” is a common regret — pandit later refuses to officiate, forcing cancellation fees.

Same-sex and civil marriage note (2026 context)

Legal recognition evolves separately from Hindu samskara. Some couples hold court registration on a secular date and a later Hindu ceremony on pandit-approved muhurat; others choose one event. This site lists traditional Hindu shubh dates only — not legal advice.

Re-marriage and second vivaha

Rules may differ by community; astrologer selects dates avoiding certain nakshatras tied to first marriage traditions. Do not reuse first wedding’s public list without fresh kundali review.

Documents to share with astrologer

  • Birth date, time, place (hospital certificate) for both.
  • Gotra and kuldevata name.
  • Preferred city for ceremony (Mumbai vs native village — sunrise time changes).
  • Whether reception is same day or separate English-date party.

Checklist before booking the hall

  1. Shortlist months from Marriage Muhurat 2026 — avoid closed months unless pandit approves exception.
  2. Share bride/groom birth time, place, gotra with astrologer; request 3–5 date options.
  3. Cross-check each date on calendar for overlapping family festivals or travel.
  4. Verify hall availability only after pandit confirms primary date + lagna window.
  5. Check Rahu Kaal for baraat departure — optional family rule.
  6. Confirm pandit, purohit, and muhurat scroll (लग्नपत्रिका) before non-refundable deposit.
  7. Plan Pitru clearance / devak ceremony per family if required before vivaha.
  8. Read site Disclaimer — lists are educational.

Cost traps when ignoring muhurat

August monsoon discounts on halls and photographers tempt budget couples — if pandit declines, sunk deposit often exceeds savings. Pitru Paksha September dates may clash with NRI relatives’ travel; fixing muhurat before buying tickets saves more than hall negotiation.

Inter-community marriages

Marathi-Kannada or Marathi-Punjabi weddings may need two pandits or blended rituals — allow extra rehearsal days on calendar beyond single-community timelines.

Muhurat vs reception

Many Mumbai couples hold Hindu pheras on shubh muhurat but a English-date reception for colleagues — two events, two calendars. Clarify which date goes on printed invitation header; astrologer cares about ritual start, HR cares about reception leave.

Frequently asked questions

2026 closed months reminder

Do not book hall-first in January (Shukra Moodha), August (Ashadha), September (Pitru Paksha), or October (Navaratri) without pandit exception letter. Busy months: February, April (Akshaya Tritiya 20 Apr), May–June, November–December. Cross-link date grid with this guide before paying deposit — cancellation policies are stricter than astrologer fees.

Is this guide personal advice?

No. Educational only. Always consult a qualified local astrologer for your wedding.

Where are 2026 dates listed?

Marriage Muhurat 2026 page.

Why no August weddings?

Ashadha/Shravana tradition — see closed months above.

Can we marry on Ekadashi?

Community-specific; many avoid. Ask your pandit.

Does mangal dosha remove all listed dates?

Mangal may require matching with another manglik or remedies — personal chart work.

What about destination weddings abroad?

Panchanga date usually stays India-reference; lagna time shifts with local timezone — astrologer must recalculate.

Are Akshaya Tritiya weddings extra auspicious?

20 April 2026 is highly sought — halls premium; still verify personal kundali; generic “Akshaya” does not override mangal dosha.

Can two cousins marry in same month listed shubh?

Some families avoid same month for two siblings/cousins — social custom, not astronomy; discuss elders.
