What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya (चोघडिया) is a simple way to divide the day into eight time slots. Each slot has a name and is either शुभ (auspicious) or अशुभ (inauspicious). People check it before starting travel, new work, business, or ceremonies so they begin during a good period.

In short: The day (sunrise to sunset) is split into 8 equal parts. Each part gets a name like Amrit, Shubh, Labh (good) or Rog, Kaal, Udveg (avoid). The order of these names changes by weekday. So on Monday the first period might be Labh (good), on Tuesday it might be Udveg (avoid).

Today's Choghadiya (approximate)

Below is today's order of periods for daytime. Timings assume sunrise ~6:00 AM and sunset ~6:00 PM (Mumbai). Each slot is about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Exact times depend on actual sunrise/sunset. For precise timings, use a daily Panchanga or Choghadiya calculator.

When to use Choghadiya

  • Travel — Start a journey during Shubh, Labh, or Amrit.
  • Business — Sign deals, start new work, or important meetings in Shubh periods.
  • Ceremonies — Griha pravesh, vehicle purchase, or other rituals are often planned in Amrit or Shubh.
  • Daily work — Starting something new (job, project, purchase) is considered better in auspicious slots.

Avoid starting important or new tasks during Rog, Kaal, and Udveg. Use Chal (neutral) only for travel or routine work if needed.
